ITN-PhD position on new approaches to target breast and ovarian cancer in the Gorgoulis Group, National Kapodistrian University of Athens

One PhD position is open in the Molecular Carcinogenesis Group headed by Prof Vassilis G Gorgoulis at the Dept of Histology-Embryology, Medical School, National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), for a highly motivated researcher with a desire to unravel new mechanisms that facilitate breast and ovarian cancer development. The position is part of a newly established European training network, SYNTRAIN.

The group and our research

The goal of our studies is to identify cancer specific weaknesses that can be exploited to treat breast and ovarian cancer. Our group consists of dedicated researchers, and we have excellent research facilities in modern laboratories. More information on the Gorgoulis group on


The project aims to decipher molecular mechanisms by which Cdc6 overexpression facilitates breast/ovarian cancer development and affects DNA replication stress both in vitro and in a mouse model.

Start: Preferably 1 January 2017 or after agreement.

Duration: 3 years as a PhD

Principal supervisor is Professor Vassilis G Gorgoulis.

The SYNTRAIN Project

The positions are part of a newly established European cancer training network, SYNTRAIN, funded by the European Commission as a Marie Curie Initial Training Network. The network aims to develop new cancer therapeutic strategies, to foster research talents, provide training activities for member fellows in Europe and facilitate excellent networking possibilities with both academic and private partners within the field. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A Master of Science in biology, biochemistry or similar
  • Experience in cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry
  • A desire to make a difference through highly dedicated research
  • Excellent communication skills in English written and spoken

Additional requirements:

  • Candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers after the Master degree, and they must not yet have a doctoral degree at the time of the appointment.
  • Candidates can be of any nationality but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Greece for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the start date of the fellowship.

Place of employment and Work
The employment and place of work is at the Dept of Histology-Embryology (DHE), Medical School, University of Athens. DHE is located close to the centre of Athens, in the Goudi area. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories, a number of cutting-edge core facilities and the neighboring Biomedical Research Foundation of Academy of Athens and a well-functioning administrative and technical support. Terms of salary and employment

The appointment as PhD fellow is for 3 years. It is conditioned upon the candidates’ successful enrolment in the PhD program at the Medical School, NKUA. The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD program from the Ministry of Education and the guidelines for the PhD program at the Faculty of Medicine.

The monthly living allowance is approx 2883 EUR. There will be additional allowances for mobility and family according to EU-rules.
